A containership captain, who’s vessel crashed into an anchored oil tanker earlier this week, has now been arrested after one crew member remains missing and now presumed dead.
On Monday March 10th, the containership ‘Solong’ collided with the tanker ‘Stena Immaculate’ in the North Sea off of the coast of Hull, resulting in multiple explosions and blazes breaking out on both ships.
36 crew members were rescued and taken safely to shore, but one remains missing. Rescue teams were carrying out searches in the area, but sadly they were unsuccessful and have now come to an end.
Humberside Police continue to investigate the cause of the catastrophic accident and the crew members, from America, Russia and the Philippines, are understood to be assisting with their enquiries.
The tanker, which was carrying 220,000 barrels of jet fuel for the US military, was stationary when the containership, travelling at about 16 knots (18mph), struck it during fog.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring shipments are covered by cargo insurance. For information on our policies, please contact a member of the Unique team.
