The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel is already causing disruption to air freight in the region and beyond, amid fears that ocean freight services could be in for major disruption too.
Air Freight
Tensions in the Middle East have led to numerous flight cancellations and reroutings. Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport is closed to civilian and commercial flights, and national carrier El Al has suspended services until at least June 23. Key airspace, including Iraq – a vital corridor for Europe-Asia flights – is also closed, forcing carriers to adjust long-haul operations. Many international airlines are rerouting flights away from Middle Eastern airspace, reshaping global flight paths.
Ocean Freight
Ocean freight is facing a potential crisis as Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global oil shipments. About 20% of the world’s oil passes through this narrow waterway. An Iranian blockade would disrupt energy markets and access to critical Gulf ports, including Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port.
Needless to say, any chance of containerships returning to the Red Sea route in the short-term future is as far away as ever.
With hostilities ongoing, logistics networks are bracing for further disruptions. Unique Forwarding is closely monitoring the situation and is available for updates or enquiries.
