Major Fire Aboard Containership Off India’s Southwest Coast

A catastrophic fire has broken out on the vessel MV Wan Hai 503, a container ship navigating the Arabian Sea off the southwest coast of India, with four crew members missing.

The vessel, which was traveling from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Mumbai, India, experienced an internal explosion on Monday, sparking a severe onboard blaze. The Indian Coast Guard responded swiftly to the emergency call, managing to rescue 18 of the 22 crew members. Unfortunately, four crew members still remain unaccounted for.

Intermittent blasts have continued to be reported from the vessel. The exact cause of the explosion has yet to be determined. More than 50 containers were lost during the incident and are currently adrift along the Kerala coastline.

The ship’s cargo included hazardous materials such as nitrocellulose, resin, and approximately 100 tonnes of bunker oil, adding to the environmental and safety concerns.

This incident is the second major maritime emergency in the region within weeks. In May, the MSC Elsa 3, a Liberian-flagged vessel, sank following an oil and hazardous cargo leak. That vessel had previously developed a critical list due to adverse monsoon conditions.

In a separate event, the Morning Midas, carrying nearly 3,000 vehicles, caught fire and was abandoned off the coast of Alaska last week.

These back-to-back incidents underscore the dangers faced by seafarers and highlight the critical importance of cargo insurance.
