Missile Strikes CMA CGM Containership Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

A missile strike hit a CMA CGM containership in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, leaving several crew members injured amid worsening instability in the region.

The French shipping group have reportedly confirmed that the injured seafarers were evacuated from the vessel and are receiving medical treatment.

Industry reports identified the ship as the CMA CGM San Antonio, a Malta-flagged containership with a capacity of around 2,800 teu.

Security conditions in the strategically critical waterway have deteriorated sharply in recent days as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate. Both sides are enforcing rival maritime restrictions in and around the strait.

The latest incident follows a string of security events in the Gulf this week, including a fire aboard a commercial vessel, another suspected projectile attack, and reports of an assault involving small boats.

According to maritime sources, approximately 22,500 crew members aboard 1,550 merchant ships representing 87 nations are currently stranded in the Gulf region.

Amid the growing crisis, US President Donald Trump announced yesterday that his administration would temporarily suspend the recently launched “Project Freedom” maritime protection initiative.

The program, unveiled on Sunday, was designed to support and escort commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Plans for the operation included more than 100 aircraft operating from land and sea bases, a range of unmanned systems across multiple domains, and roughly 15,000 military personnel.

Just two days after introducing the initiative, however, Trump said the operation would be placed on hold “for a short period of time” while Washington evaluates the possibility of reaching a diplomatic agreement with Iran.
