Shipping Lines Prepare Asia Ocean Rate Increases From June

Ocean freight prices seem set to climb once again as global shipping carriers prepare a fresh round of rate increases ahead of the busy peak season in Asia. Most of the new pricing is expected to come into effect from 1 June, with changes varying by shipping line, route and origin.

The increases are being introduced through a mix of General Rate Increases (GRIs) and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS), both of which are commonly used by carriers during periods of tightening market conditions. While some announcements in recent times have occasionally failed to fully materialise, the current market environment appears to be offering stronger support for upward movement.

A key factor behind the anticipated rise is the continued effort by carriers to manage vessel capacity. Across several major trade routes, shipping alliances have significantly increased the number of blank sailings, effectively reducing available space and placing upward pressure on pricing.

At the same time, demand levels are reportedly showing signs of recovery, with bookings on Asia–Europe services strengthening considerably over the past two weeks, prompting speculation that the traditional peak season may arrive earlier than expected this year. The transpacific market is also experiencing renewed momentum, with Asia–North America volumes beginning to improve.

With supply tightening and demand strengthening across multiple regions, importers should be prepared for potential freight cost increases from the beginning of June. Businesses moving cargo internationally may benefit from reviewing shipment schedules and securing space early as market conditions continue to evolve.
