Hopes for a sustained recovery in Suez Canal shipping have been dealt another setback after a Houthi strike indicated that vessels could face risks across a broader area of the Red Sea.

The incident occurred on 24 August when a Saudi-linked very large crude carrier was hit around 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu. A fire broke out on deck, but all crew members were reported safe and there was no identified environmental damage.

More significantly for international shipping, the attack took place well north of the Bab el-Mandeb, where much of the recent threat has been concentrated. This widening risk could affect security assessments for vessels calling at Saudi Red Sea ports and create further uncertainty for carriers considering a return to Suez routings. Higher insurance costs, additional security measures or continued diversions around southern Africa could all remain factors.

There has been more encouraging news from the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran and Oman have proposed a temporary corridor alongside joint mine-clearance activity. Negotiations are also planned for a permanent traffic-management arrangement. Nevertheless, essential details covering the corridor’s location, reporting processes and security procedures have not been released, while drifting and uncharted mines continue to present a severe threat.

At the same time, US authorities have substantially widened Iran-related sanctions through Operation Economic Outcast. Almost 60 entities, individuals and vessels have been targeted, while new measures increase the potential reach of secondary sanctions into the shipping sector.

The combination of physical security threats and tighter financial restrictions means that routing, vessel selection, counterparty checks and payment screening will require particularly careful attention.
