US Government Shutdown Causes Growing Flight Disruption

The US government shutdown has now been in effect for a week, with the country’s airports facing increasing disruption due to shortages of air traffic controllers.

The federal government shutdown on October 1st after Congress failed to pass a funding bill. Both major political parties continue to blame each other for the deadlock, which has led to the suspension of many non-essential government functions.

Although air traffic controllers are considered essential personnel and must keep working during a shutdown, they are currently not being paid. Reports indicate that growing financial pressure and stress have led many controllers to call in sick, contributing to widespread staffing gaps.

These shortages have caused a sharp rise in flight delays and cancellations. At some airports, staffing levels have dropped to as low as 50%, significantly straining operations. Several major hubs across the country have already experienced disruption, with over 3,000 flights affected so far. If the situation persists, air cargo operations may face substantial delays.

Ocean freight remains largely unaffected at this time. While certain administrative processes involving U.S. Customs, the FDA, and the EPA have slowed, cargo continues to move. However, prolonged shutdown conditions could eventually lead to more significant delays in ocean freight as well.
